Loikum, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
Loikum, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, has dedicated itself to the motto „no one can do everything, no one can do nothing, together we can do a lot“. That’s also why the development process which was started in 2003 follows the bottom-up principle based on instruments like the “Zukunfswerkstatt” supported by external consultants.
A highlight of the future-oriented development process is the fiber-optic network, which was already installed in 2013 thanks to the initiative and contribution of the inhabitants. High-quality home office workplaces for globally operating companies have thus been created. Great attention is paid to settlement development, housing suited to different needs, and an attractive local supply, which is ensured through close cooperation with local organic farmers.
Also noteworthy is the operation of the residents’ busses, which are operated by around 50 volunteers. In addition, the chosen path towards energy self-sufficiency, the village care and the lively club life are positive developments.
