Holzheim, East Belgium, Belgium

Holzheim in East Belgium, part of the Germanspeaking Community of Belgium, began its developmental process by establishing a village association in 2003, with the help of which it has been possible to mobilize almost all villagers and thus created the foundation for an active and high-quality public participation.

The resulting above-average civic engagement is omnipresent and deserves high recognition. The current realization of the village house with two „stepping stone apartments“, the pilot project for wastewater treatment, the high sensitivity towards ecological issues, which manifests itself among other things in the high density of organic farmers, and the installation of alternative forms of energy as well as the building land model in the town center represent outstanding projects for the small village with its approximately 100 inhabitants.
