Langenstein, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, has done very well for a village affected by the upheaval of 1990 in a development process that has been going on for decades with great commitment from citizens, to use and develop the existing potentials.
Langenstein is pursuing the goal of establishing itself as a location with a high quality of life as well as a high living quality for younger and older people in the northern Harz region.
The village center was strengthened with the expansion of the culture- and celebration barn on the Schäferhof which is protected as a historic monument, the unique cave dwellings were restored, preserved and put into value, the culture of remembrance of the victims of the former concentration camp is made serviceable in the present, a new school was founded based upon citizen responsibility, the social life strengthened and further projects considered and discussed by the inhabitants.
